Post Office

History Of Branchville's Postal Service

On January 2, 1824, Bonnell M. Haggerty became the first postmaster of the newly established Branchville Post Office. The following year Samuel Price became the postmaster. Usually the postmaster served in the position several years. Branchville post office, too, has made several moves, from down Broad Street below Division Street to the western side of Broad across from the present bank and its present location which has been renovated to include larger quarters these past several years.

An interesting story about the rural delivery from Branchville to Culver Lake was that the postman rode his horse and carriage as far as he could go on East Shore, then rowed a boat to the North Shore and from there he walked to the cottages to deliver the mail.
